Tutorial: Sew on the Go Needle Holder

Are you an avid crafter or someone who loves to sew on the go? Do you often find yourself in need of a convenient way to carry your needles safely? Look no further! In this tutorial, I'll show you how to repurpose an empty lipstick tube into a handy needle holder for your on-the-go hand stitching needs.

Materials Needed:

  • Empty lipstick tube

  • Hot Glue Gun/Glue

  • Scissors

  • Batting Scrap- Approximately a 2” x 2” square

    • If you are using fabric overtop of it, cut your batting to 1 ¼” x 1 ¼”

  • Fabric (optional) Approximately a 1 ¾” x 1 ¾” square

Step 1: Prepare the Lipstick Tube

Ensure that the lipstick tube is clean and free of any remaining lipstick. Wash it thoroughly with soap and water, then dry it completely. I didn’t have an empty tube available, so I purchased these from Amazon. They work great and of course I made extras to hand out to my quilty friends.

Step 2: Cut the Batting

Start by cutting a small square of scrap batting. For most lipstick tubes, a 2” square (or a 1 ¼” square if you are covering it with fabric) should work well. Remember not to overstuff the tube, as this can make it difficult to insert the needles later on.

Step 3: Shape the Batting

Take the batting and work it into a ball shape as best as you can. This will provide a nice cushion for your needles and help keep them in place.

Step 4: Wrap the Batting (Optional)

If you have some scrap fabric on hand, you can use it to cover the batting. Wrap the fabric around the ball of batting, using only enough fabric to just cover the batting. This step is optional but can add a decorative touch to your needle holder.

Step 5: Glue the Batting into the Tube

Using a hot glue gun, add a small drop of glue to the bottom of the lipstick tube. Carefully insert the batting (and fabric if you're using it) into the tube, with the rounded part of the batting facing up and the edges placed down. Be sure not to use too much glue, as this can make it harder to insert the needles later on.

Step 6: Using Your New Needle Holder

Once the batting is in place, gently press down to secure it in the tube. Allow the glue to dry completely before using the needle holder.

When you insert your needles into the holder, make sure they are pushed down far enough so that the lid will not bend them when the container is closed.

With just a few simple steps, you can repurpose an empty lipstick tube into a practical needle holder for your on-the-go sewing projects. This upcycling project not only helps reduce waste but also provides a convenient way to carry your needles safely. Give it a try and enjoy the convenience of having your needles neatly organized and ready whenever inspiration strikes!
